How graded coins are priced

The grade on the label sets the starting range. Then we look at the coin itself, since two coins in the same grade can sell far apart when one has better luster or toning.

We check price guides, dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results for that date, mint mark and grade. Common modern bullion coins in slabs sell close to their metal value.

What moves the offer on a graded coin

  • Coins in PCGS and NGC holders are the ones dealers and collectors trade most readily.
  • On a scarce date, one grade point near the top of the 1 to 70 scale can change the price a great deal.
  • Eye appeal still counts inside the holder, so full luster or attractive toning brings more than a dull coin at the same grade.
  • A cracked or scratched holder needs a closer look before we price the coin inside it.
  • Modern bullion coins in high-grade slabs often sell for only a little over their metal.

Graded coins in Chicago collections

Sellers who want to sell PCGS or NGC coins in Chicago tend to fall into two groups. Some are collectors who bought slabbed coins over the years and now want to sell part of what they own.

Others opened a parent's safe-deposit box in Skokie or Oak Lawn and found a stack of plastic holders with labels they cannot read. We handle both the same way, reading each label first and then studying the coin inside under a loupe.

Some of the slabs we see hold coins with a Chicago story. Collectors know the 1892 and 1893 Columbian half dollar as the first U.S. commemorative coin and sold for $1 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park.

Worn ones are common, so on that coin the grade on the label does most of the work. The 1893 Isabella quarter, requested by the fair's Board of Lady Managers under Bertha Palmer, is a different case: only 24,214 were sold, and a slabbed one sells well above its silver value in any grade.

Another local coin often kept in a holder is the 1918 Illinois Centennial half dollar. It shows a young, beardless Lincoln based on a statue by Andrew O'Connor, with an eagle from the Illinois state seal on the back, and 100,058 were struck.

The Illinois Centennial Monument in Logan Square was dedicated that same year for the same anniversary. Price on this half follows grade closely, so one point on the label can move the offer.

Leave every coin sealed in its holder. Opening a slab wipes out the grade, and a coin that gets handled or rubbed afterward can pick up marks that lower it for good. Bring a cracked or scuffed holder exactly as it is.

Graded coins are where sorting collector coins from melt coins matters most. A slabbed common-date Silver Eagle sells close to its silver, while a slabbed Carson City Morgan or a high-grade pre-1933 gold coin is priced on collector demand. We mark each one on the written list so a better date is never paid as bullion.

We see graded-coin sellers by appointment from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. We meet sellers from the city and from Metra towns such as Naperville on the BNSF and Arlington Heights on the UP-Northwest.

If a graded collection is too large to carry out of a home in Hinsdale or Glenview, ask about a home visit. Accepted offers are paid the same day in cash or by wire.

Say yes and leave with cash, or a same-day wire for a large sale. Say no and keep everything.

Questions about selling graded coins in Chicago

Where can I sell PCGS or NGC certified coins in Chicago?

Ring (773) 241-8624, tell us what the labels say, and we will book a private time between 10am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. We buy slabbed coins from both grading services and set the meeting place when you book. You get a written, item-by-item offer, and if you accept it, you are paid the same day in cash or by same-day wire.

Should I take my coins out of their plastic holders first?

Please leave them sealed. The grade only applies while the coin stays in its original holder, so an opened slab means the coin has to be graded again.

Handling or wiping a loose coin can also leave hairlines that lower its grade. Bring every coin as it is, including holders that are cracked or scuffed.

Do you pay price guide value for graded coins?

Price guides are one reference we check, along with dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results for the same coin in the same grade. Guide figures often run above what dealers actually pay, so each line on your written offer shows our own price for that coin. You are free to compare it with any other buyer before deciding.

Are modern slabs like MS70 Silver Eagles worth much more than melt?

Some are and many are not. A modern Silver Eagle or Gold Eagle in a top-grade holder often sells for only a little over its metal, because so many have been made and graded.

An older scarce date in a high grade can bring far more. Your written list separates the two so you can see which coins carry the premium.

What should I bring to sell graded coins?

Bring the coins and a government-issued photo ID, which we need to buy from you. Old invoices or grading receipts can help if you have them, though they are not required. If the slabs are in a safe-deposit box, you can bring them straight from the bank to the appointment in the box they came in.
