How bullion is priced

Bullion is bought for its metal. We read the weight and fineness stamped on each bar or round, confirm the weight on the scale, and multiply the pure metal content by the live spot price.

Bars from well-known refiners in original packaging are the easiest to buy. Bars with no maker's mark, or with worn stamps, may need extra testing before we make an offer.

What sets the offer on bullion

  • Pure metal content, in troy ounces, sets the base of every offer.
  • The spot price for gold, silver, platinum or palladium is read live when you visit.
  • Bars from refiners such as PAMP Suisse, Engelhard and Johnson Matthey are quick to verify.
  • Original assay cards and sealed packaging help.
  • Large lots are weighed together after each piece is checked.

Selling bullion in Chicago and the suburbs

Bullion in the Chicago suburbs often sits in a home safe or a bank box for years before anyone sells it. Some owners in Schaumburg, Arlington Heights and Naperville bought bars and rounds as long-term savings and never kept the receipts. To sell bullion in Chicago you only need the metal and a government-issued photo ID, and we work out weight and purity from the bar itself.

The bars we see usually carry the stamp of a large refiner such as PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Engelhard, Johnson Matthey or the Royal Canadian Mint. The stamp lists the weight and fineness, for a bar like 10 troy ounces of .999 silver or one ounce of .9999 gold. We check the stamp, put the bar on the scale and measure it before we write anything down.

Poured bars and rounds from smaller private mints also come out of estates. Pieces without a well-known stamp may need extra testing at the appointment, and we explain each test while you watch.

Platinum and palladium bars can look like silver at a glance, so every stamp gets read, and those two metals are priced from their own spot prices. Silver Eagles in original mint tubes are counted by the tube and then spot checked coin by coin.

Many businesses that turn up in a search for bullion dealers in Chicago both buy and sell metal, while we buy only, so the visit covers what you brought and nothing else. A seller with a mixed safe in Hinsdale or Glenview might leave with one line for each gold bar, a weight total for the silver rounds and a separate line for a platinum coin, all on a written offer they can take home and compare.

Moving a large amount of metal across the city takes some planning, and a private, one-on-one appointment helps with that. We set the meeting place when you book, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. For larger sales, a same-day wire to your bank means you are not carrying cash home on I-90 or the Eisenhower.

A small stack of bars takes about 10 minutes. A large holding can take 30 to 60, since each piece is checked before the group is weighed.

If the bullion is part of an estate and too heavy to move easily, ask about a home visit when you call (773) 241-8624. We call back the same day.

How selling works

Three steps, usually done in one visit.

  1. 1

    Tell us what you have

Send the form or call. We call back the same day and book a private appointment, Monday to Saturday.

  2. 2

    Watch the appraisal

We check each coin's date, mint mark, grade and metal in front of you, then write the offer down line by line.

  3. 3

    Get paid that day

Say yes and leave with cash, or a same-day wire for a large sale. Say no and keep everything.

Questions about selling bullion in Chicago

Where can I sell gold and silver bars in Chicago?

Call Chicago Coin Buyers at (773) 241-8624 to set a private appointment, Monday to Saturday between 10am and 6pm. We buy gold bars, silver bars, rounds and bullion coins from sellers across Chicago and the suburbs. Each piece is weighed on a calibrated scale you can read, and the written offer follows the live spot price.

Do I need the original receipt or assay card to sell a bar?

You do not need a receipt to sell bullion, and plenty of bars come to us loose. Assay cards and sealed packaging do help, since they confirm the refiner and fineness at a glance.

Bars without them are checked against the stamp, the weight and the bar's size. Bring a government-issued photo ID along with the metal.

Do you buy platinum and palladium?

Yes. We buy platinum and palladium bars, rounds and bullion coins. Each metal has its own spot price, and we quote it live at the appointment.

The stamp on the piece tells us the fineness, and the calibrated scale gives the weight. Your written offer lists platinum and palladium on separate lines from any gold or silver you sell.

How are silver rounds priced next to Silver Eagles?

Both are priced on silver content against the live spot price. A one ounce .999 round and an American Silver Eagle each hold one troy ounce of silver.

Government coins such as Silver Eagles and Maple Leafs are more widely traded, and that can show up in the offer. We write each type on its own line so you can compare them.

Can you buy a large bullion holding in one visit?

Yes. A large lot can take 30 to 60 minutes, since every bar is checked before the group is weighed.

For larger sales we can pay by same-day wire to your bank. If the holding is part of an estate or is too heavy to move easily, ask about a home visit when you call, and we will call back the same day.
