How we price coins
Coins fall into two groups when we price them. Common silver and gold coins are priced on their metal content against the live spot price.
Collector coins are priced on date, mint mark, grade and current demand, using published price guides, dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results. We sort every coin into one group or the other before we write an offer.
What sets the price of a coin
- The date and mint mark tell us when and where the coin was struck.
- Grade on the 1 to 70 Sheldon scale often matters more than age.
- A cleaned coin sells to collectors for far less than an original one.
- Silver and gold content puts a floor under most older U.S. coins.
- Even toning and original luster can lift a coin above others in the same grade.

Where to sell coins in Chicago
People who want to sell coins in Chicago can choose among pawn shops, coin shows, online marketplaces and mail-in buyers. Mailing coins means they leave your hands before anyone has made an offer. When you sell coins to us, they stay in front of you until you have a written offer and decide what to do with it.
A lot of what we buy comes out of houses that one family has owned for decades. The brick bungalows built from about 1910 to 1930 on the Northwest and Southwest Sides, and in Berwyn and Cicero, are full of closets and dresser drawers where a cigar box of dimes can sit for fifty years. Dimes, quarters and halves dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver, so even a worn handful has metal value.
Chicago also has coins of its own to watch for. The Columbian half dollar, dated 1892 and 1893, was sold for $1 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park, and worn ones still come out of local estates.
Only 24,214 of the 1893 Isabella quarters were sold at the same fair, and that coin brings well above its silver value in any grade. The 1918 Illinois Centennial half, with a young, beardless Lincoln on the front, was struck for the state's 100th birthday.
Sellers reach us from the city and from towns along the Metra lines: Evanston and Wilmette on the UP-North, Des Plaines and Arlington Heights on the UP-Northwest, Hinsdale and Naperville on the BNSF. Where we meet is set when you book. If you have a large collection or an entire estate, ask about a home visit when you call.
A handful of coins takes about 10 minutes to go through. A collection spread across several albums can take 30 to 60 minutes, because each coin is checked under a loupe for date, mint mark, grade and eye appeal.
Silver and gold coins go on a calibrated scale you can read yourself. The offer lists every item, and the list goes home with you whether or not you sell.
Bring a government-issued photo ID if you plan to sell that day. Accepted offers are paid the same day in cash, or by same-day wire to your bank for larger sales. Appointments run Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and if we miss your call to (773) 241-8624 we call back the same day.

Questions about selling sell coins in Chicago
Where is the best place to sell coins in Chicago?
Choose a buyer who checks each coin while you watch and puts the offer in writing. We do both at every private appointment, and we separate collector coins from melt coins so a better date is never priced as bullion. You can hold our item-by-item list up against any other offer before you make a decision.
Are my old coins worth more than face value?
Many old coins are. Dimes, quarters and halves dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver, and Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver.
Most clad coins from 1965 on are worth face value, and most circulated wheat cents bring only a few cents each. A scarce date or a high grade can push a coin well above its metal value.
Should I clean my coins before I sell them?
Leave them as they are. Cleaning lowers a coin's grade and its value, and collectors pay far less for a cleaned coin, even one that looks brighter afterward.
Keep coins in whatever album, tube or holder they came in, and handle them by the edges. We grade them in the condition you bring them.
How fast do I get paid when I sell coins?
You are paid the same day you accept the written offer, in cash or by same-day wire to your bank for larger sales. Bring a government-issued photo ID to sell. If you decide to hold on to your coins, you take them home along with the item-by-item list we wrote up during the appointment.
Is there a coin buyer near me in the suburbs?
We buy coins from sellers across Cook and DuPage counties, including Skokie, Glenview, Oak Park, Elmhurst, Schaumburg and Oak Lawn. Appointments run Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and the meeting place is set when you book. Call (773) 241-8624, and if we miss you, expect a call back the same day.
