How gold jewelry is priced
Gold jewelry is priced on two numbers: what it weighs and how pure it is. We sort pieces by karat, since 10K is 41.7% gold and 18K is 75%, then weigh each group in grams.
Weight times purity gives the pure gold content, and the offer follows the live spot price for that amount. Gold coins with collector value are priced on their own.
What changes a gold offer
- Karat sets the share of pure gold in each piece.
- Weight is read in grams or pennyweights, and 1 dwt equals 1.555 grams.
- Gold-filled and gold-plated pieces hold very little gold.
- The offer follows the live spot price at the time of your appointment.
- A gold coin with collector demand is priced above its melt.

Where to sell gold in Chicago
Anyone deciding where to sell gold in Chicago will find mall kiosks, pawn shops, hotel buying events and mail-in envelopes. Ask any of them to sort and weigh your gold where you can watch. As gold buyers in Chicago, we do that at every appointment, and the written offer lists each karat group next to its weight.
Much of the gold we see comes from jewelry boxes in homes families have held for decades. A drawer in a Berwyn bungalow or an older Evanston house might hold a broken chain, a single earring, a high school class ring and a grandparent's wedding band.
All of it counts as scrap gold, and scrap is bought by weight and karat. A safe-deposit box opened after a parent dies often holds rings and chains in small envelopes, with 10K and 18K mixed together.
Dental gold is usually a gold alloy, and we buy it by weight along with the rest of your gold. Gold-filled and gold-plated pieces are another matter. They show up in costume jewelry and older watch cases, they hold very little gold, and we point them out so you know why they are left off the offer.
Most American jewelry carries a karat stamp inside a band or near a clasp. 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.3% and 18K is 75%, so a gram of 18K holds close to twice the gold in a gram of 10K. Gold is weighed in grams or pennyweights, and we show you the reading on the scale for each group.
Gold coins and bars that turn up in a jewelry box are pulled out and priced separately. A pre-1933 $20 double eagle holds 0.9675 troy oz of gold and a one ounce American Gold Eagle holds one troy oz. A double eagle with a better date or a high grade can bring a collector price above melt, which is why we check it before weighing. Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs and Mexican 50 pesos are bought on their gold content too, and the 50 pesos holds 1.2057 troy oz.
Appointments run Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, for sellers from Lincoln Park out to Orland Park. Bring a government-issued photo ID.
Accept the written offer and you are paid the same day, in cash or by same-day wire for larger sales. If you say no, you leave with your gold and the list.

Questions about selling sell gold in Chicago
Where can I sell gold in Chicago?
Book a private appointment with Chicago Coin Buyers, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. We buy gold jewelry, scrap, dental gold, coins and bars from sellers across the city and suburbs. Your gold is sorted by karat and weighed in front of you, and the place to meet is set when you book.
Do you pay cash for gold in Chicago?
Yes. When you accept our written offer, we pay the same day in cash, or by same-day wire to your bank for larger sales.
You need a government-issued photo ID to sell. If you turn the offer down, you keep everything, along with the written list showing each karat group and its weight.
Will you buy broken chains and single earrings?
Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings and charms with missing parts are all scrap gold, and scrap is bought by weight and karat.
Damage does not change how much gold a piece holds. Put small pieces in a sealed bag or envelope so nothing gets lost on the way to your appointment.
How do I know what karat my gold is?
Look for a small stamp inside a ring band or near a clasp. 10K, 14K, 18K and 22K are the common marks, and 22K is 91.6% gold.
Gold-filled and gold-plated pieces hold very little gold, and we will point them out. If you cannot find any stamp, bring the piece anyway and we will sort it.
Do gold dealers in Chicago pay the same for coins and jewelry?
We pay for jewelry on gold content alone. Gold coins can be worth more, since some dates and grades sell to collectors above melt.
One ounce American Gold Eagles and Krugerrands each hold one troy oz of gold, so even common ones are easy to price. We separate coins from jewelry and list them on their own lines of the offer.
