How silver dollars are priced
A Morgan or Peace dollar holds 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, which sets the floor under every offer. Common dates in worn condition sell near that floor.
The price climbs from there with scarcer dates, mint marks such as CC, sharp strikes and clean surfaces. We price each dollar on its own, checking dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results.
What moves the price of a silver dollar
- Silver content gives every Morgan and Peace dollar the same starting value.
- The mint mark sits on the back, and a CC from Carson City adds collector interest.
- Some dates were struck in small numbers and sell far above silver.
- Uncirculated dollars with full luster bring more than worn ones.
- Scratches, cleaning and rim dings pull a dollar back toward melt.

Silver dollars in Chicago homes
A coffee can or cigar box of silver dollars is one of the things heirs bring us most. In Cicero, families of workers from the old Western Electric Hawthorne Works kept dollars put away for years, and bungalows in Berwyn and across the Southwest Side hold many of the same small stashes. If you plan to sell Morgan silver dollars in Chicago, expect a box like that to hold mostly worn common dates, with now and then a coin worth far more than the rest.
There has never been a U.S. Mint in Chicago, so each dollar in those boxes carries the mark of a mint elsewhere: O for New Orleans, S for San Francisco, CC for Carson City, D for Denver, and no letter at all for Philadelphia. On a Morgan, the mint mark is on the back, below the wreath and just above the letters DO in DOLLAR. On a Peace dollar, look below the word ONE near the tip of the eagle's wing.
Carson City Morgans, struck from 1878 to 1893, draw steady collector demand, and a family box sometimes holds one that nobody noticed. The 1893-S Morgan is a famous rarity, so every 1893 dollar we handle gets a close look. The 1921 Morgan, the date people find most, is common, and worn examples sell close to their silver value.
We open every roll and look at each coin inside, since an original roll can hide a better date or a few pieces in higher grade. A canvas bag carried up from a basement in Oak Lawn or Bridgeport may take 30 to 60 minutes to sort. You watch the count and the weight on a calibrated scale you can read.
Appointments are private and one-on-one, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Call (773) 241-8624 and we call back the same day to set a time and a meeting place.
If the dollars are part of a larger estate, ask whether a home visit is possible. Bring a government-issued photo ID and the coins just as you found them, unpolished.
Each dollar gets its own line on the written offer, which helps when brothers and sisters are splitting a parent's coins and want to see where the value sits. Accept, and you are paid the same day in cash or by wire. Decline, and you keep every dollar along with the list.

Questions about selling silver dollars in Chicago
Where can I sell Morgan silver dollars in Chicago?
Book a private appointment with Chicago Coin Buyers by calling (773) 241-8624. We meet sellers from across Chicago and the suburbs Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, with the location set when you book. Every Morgan and Peace dollar is checked under a loupe and weighed in front of you, and the appraisal and written offer are free.
Is my 1921 silver dollar rare?
A 1921 Morgan usually is not. It is a common date, and worn examples tend to sell close to their silver content of 0.7734 troy ounces.
An uncirculated 1921 Morgan with full luster earns more. The Mint also struck Peace dollars in 1921, the first year of that design, and we price a 1921 Peace dollar as its own coin.
How can I tell if I have a Carson City dollar?
Turn the Morgan over and look below the wreath, just above the letters DO in DOLLAR. A small CC there means the coin was struck at Carson City, Nevada, between 1878 and 1893.
Carson City dollars draw strong collector interest, and the price depends on the date and grade. Please do not clean the coin before you bring it in.
Do you buy whole rolls and bags of silver dollars?
Yes. We buy single dollars, original bank rolls and full or partial bags. We open every roll and look at each coin, because one better date or high-grade piece can change the total.
A large group can take 30 to 60 minutes. You get an item-by-item offer that separates the collector coins from the ones priced on silver.
What should I bring to sell silver dollars?
Bring the dollars just as you found them, in their rolls, flips, albums or cigar box, along with a government-issued photo ID. Leave them unpolished, since collectors pay far less for a cleaned coin.
Any notes a parent left about where the coins came from are worth bringing. A handful of dollars takes about 10 minutes to look over.
