How gold coins are priced
Every gold coin starts at its gold content times the live spot price. Modern bullion coins such as Gold Eagles and Maple Leafs trade close to that figure.
Pre-1933 U.S. gold can carry a collector premium on top, and the size of that premium depends on date, mint mark and grade. We check dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results before we write the number down.
What sets the offer on a gold coin
- Gold content comes first, measured in troy ounces of pure gold.
- Spot price moves through the day, so we quote from the live figure at your appointment.
- Date and mint mark can lift a pre-1933 coin well above its melt value.
- Grade counts most on older U.S. gold, where light wear and clean surfaces earn more.
- Cleaned, bent or holed coins usually fall back to gold value.

Selling gold coins in Chicago and the suburbs
Most of the gold coins we see in Chicago come out of family homes held for decades. A grandparent may have put away a few $20 double eagles in a bank envelope, and a parent may have added Gold Eagles or Krugerrands later as savings. When you sell gold coins in Chicago with us, the old U.S. pieces and the modern bullion coins are priced as two groups, since only the older ones can carry a collector premium.
Safe-deposit boxes are a common source. Heirs in Hinsdale, Wilmette and Glenview open a parent's box and find a tube of Maple Leafs or a pair of Saint-Gaudens double eagles with no paperwork at all.
You do not need receipts or the original purchase price to sell. Bring the coins in the tubes, flips or envelopes they came in, and we sort them at the appointment.
No U.S. Mint has ever operated in Chicago, so the mint mark on any gold coin found here points somewhere else. Look for S, O, CC or D, or no letter at all for Philadelphia coins. A D usually means Denver, but on gold struck before the Civil War it stands for Dahlonega in Georgia.
On a Liberty double eagle the mint mark sits on the back below the eagle. On a Saint-Gaudens it sits on the front above the date. A Carson City or New Orleans mark can put a coin well above its gold value, so we read every mark under a loupe before quoting.
Sellers who try a pawn shop or a hotel buying event often come away with one lump number for the whole pile. A lump number gives you no way to tell whether a better date was counted as melt. We write each coin on its own line, and you can see which ones were priced on gold content and which earned a premium for date or grade.
You can book any day from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and we settle on a private place to meet at the same time. A few gold coins take about 10 minutes. If a parent's estate in Naperville or Elmhurst holds a large group of gold pieces, ask about a home visit when you call (773) 241-8624, and we call back the same day.
Larger gold sales are often paid by same-day wire to your bank, which saves you from riding the Metra home with cash in your coat. Bring a government-issued photo ID. If you decide to keep the coins, you keep the written list too, and it helps when an executor or attorney is dividing an estate among siblings.

Questions about selling gold coins in Chicago
Where can I sell gold coins in Chicago?
Call Chicago Coin Buyers at (773) 241-8624 to book a private appointment, Monday to Saturday between 10am and 6pm. We buy gold coins from sellers across the city and suburbs, from Lincoln Park to Orland Park. The meeting place is set when you book, and the free appraisal ends with a written, item-by-item offer you can accept or decline.
Are pre-1933 gold coins worth more than their gold?
Some are. Common-date double eagles in worn condition usually sell close to gold value.
Scarcer dates, Carson City and New Orleans mint marks, and coins with original luster and few marks can bring a collector premium. We check each coin's date, mint mark and grade under a loupe, then compare it against dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results.
How much gold is in a $20 double eagle?
A $20 double eagle holds 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold, and the coin is 90% gold by weight. Liberty and Saint-Gaudens double eagles have the same gold content, so their melt value is identical. Any gap in our offer between two double eagles comes from date, mint mark, grade and current collector demand.
Do you buy Krugerrands, Maple Leafs and other bullion coins?
Yes. We buy American Gold Eagles in all four sizes, Gold Buffaloes, Canadian Maple Leafs, South African Krugerrands, Mexican 50 pesos and British Sovereigns.
These coins are priced mainly on gold content against the live spot price. Krugerrands and one ounce Gold Eagles are 22K, Buffaloes and Maple Leafs are 24K, and each one ounce coin holds a full troy ounce of gold.
Should I clean my gold coins before I bring them in?
Please leave them as they are. Cleaning a coin lowers its grade, and collectors pay far less for a cleaned coin, so a rub with polish can wipe out the premium on an older double eagle.
Keep the coins in their flips, tubes or envelopes. If they came from a safe-deposit box with notes or receipts, bring those along.
