How it works

Four Steps From Phone Call to Payment

01

Call and book a time

Ring 773-241-8624 and describe roughly what you have. No inventory needed. We confirm a slot, Monday through Saturday.

02

Watch it get appraised

Everything is examined at the table while you sit there. A few coins take minutes. A full estate runs closer to an hour, and nothing is rushed.

03

Read the offer on paper

You get a written figure with the groups broken out and the reasoning attached. Ask about any line of it. There is no fee and no expectation.

04

Take payment or take it home

Agree and you are paid on the spot in cash, or by wire the same business day on larger totals. Decline and you keep everything, appraisal included.

Behind the number

Three Things That Decide What You Are Paid

Nothing about a coin offer needs to be mysterious. Each figure rests on public market data and published references, and we would rather explain it than ask you to take it on trust.

What the metal is doing

Bullion and common coins track the live market, so the number moves with gold and silver during the day. Larger, cleaner lots price closer to spot than scattered odds and ends.

How many survived

Scarcity is what separates a coin from its melt value. Low-mintage years and issues that rarely come to market carry premiums that have nothing to do with weight.

The state it is in

Condition multiplies scarcity. A holdered coin from PCGS or NGC arrives with that settled; a raw coin is graded conservatively here, because the authentication risk sits with us.

Why the same coin has two prices

Two Morgan dollars can hold identical silver and sell for wildly different sums. One is a common year in circulated shape and trades near its metal. The other is a low-mintage issue that seldom reaches the market, and collectors pay a large multiple for it. A buyer who weighs both and quotes one rate is paying correctly for exactly one of them.

Where we buy

Serving Chicago and the Surrounding Suburbs

Sellers come to us from across the city and well beyond it. Some are a short ride away in Hyde Park or Bridgeport, others drive in from Oak Park, Berwyn, Cicero, Evanston, Skokie, or as far west as Naperville and Elmhurst.

A good number arrive after an online buyer sent a number based on nothing but photographs. An appraisal done in the room, by someone holding the coins, regularly turns up value that a remote estimate had no way of seeing.

When a collection is large, heavy, or awkward to transport safely, ask about having a buyer come to it instead. For a serious estate that is usually the better arrangement.

Why in person

Four Reasons Not to Mail Your Coins Anywhere

Your coins never leave the table.

A mail-in sale means handing over the only leverage you have. In person, possession stays yours until a number is agreed, and you can end the conversation at any point.

Insurance rarely covers a real collection.

Shipping limits are lower than most people assume, and a serious estate can exceed them several times over. Nothing needs shipping if the buyer is across town.

Photographs hide the things that matter.

Grade turns on luster, hairlines from an old cleaning, and die detail that a phone camera flattens. Those are the details that separate a melt price from a collector price.

You can compare before deciding.

A written offer is portable. Take it to another dealer, sit on it for a week, or check the metal math yourself. A buyer who objects to that is telling you something.

Versus a pawn counter

Why Chicago Sellers Skip the Pawn Shop

A pawn shop buys gold at a steep discount because it needs to move inventory fast and cover the overhead of a storefront doing five other things. We sell into a network of collectors, investors, and auction houses, which is the entire reason our numbers can be higher.

The arithmetic is visible.

Spot price, weight, purity, and any premium, laid out where you can follow it. We will happily show you how to check the metal numbers on your own phone.

Nobody here works on commission.

We buy coins because we know coins. There is no script, no closing pressure, and no reason for us to hurry your decision.

Estates get cataloged, not weighed.

A pawn counter prices an inherited collection by the ounce. We separate it into groups and price the collector material as collector material.

Payment is immediate.

Cash across the table or a wire the same business day. No consignment period, no waiting to see what it sells for.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Coins in Chicago

Where can I sell coins in Chicago?

Chicago Coin Buyers is a dedicated coin and bullion buyer working out of an office south of the Loop and serving the whole metro area. We are numismatists rather than a pawn counter or a jeweler buying coins on the side, and every offer is built on current market data. Appointments are preferred for collections, so call 773-241-8624 to book.

What do Chicago buyers pay for 90% silver?

Common pre-1964 dimes, quarters, and halves are paid as a percentage of their melt value, calculated from the silver actually in the coins and the live spot price. Quantity improves the percentage. Better years and stronger condition are pulled out and paid above melt.

Will cleaning my coins help them sell?

It will do the opposite. Cleaning strips the original surface that collectors pay a premium for, and the damage cannot be reversed. Coins that look brighter after a polish routinely sell for a fraction of what they would have. Bring everything untouched.

How would I know whether my coins are valuable?

It comes down to metal content, year and mint mark, condition, and how many survive. None of that has to be worked out in advance. Identifying and pricing it is the appraisal, it costs nothing, and we explain what drives the number on each piece.

What is the right way to handle an inherited collection?

Bring it exactly as you found it, without cleaning or reorganizing anything. We catalog the whole collection, separate the coins carrying real collector value from the bullion and face-value material, and give you an itemized written offer. Estates are a large share of what we do.

Do you actually pay cash?

Yes. When you accept, you can walk out with cash up to our daily limit, and larger totals are wired to your account the same business day.

What is pre-1964 silver worth right now?

American dimes, quarters, and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver, so their base value follows the live silver price and the weight of silver in each coin. Because that moves throughout the day, call for a current figure rather than relying on a posted number.

Do you buy American Gold Eagles?

Yes, along with Gold Buffalos, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Sovereigns, and other government-issued gold. These are paid on weight and fineness against the live gold market, plus whatever premium that particular coin is carrying.

Can someone come to me for a large estate?

For substantial collections, or when moving them safely is a genuine problem, a buyer can travel to you anywhere around Chicago and the suburbs. Call 773-241-8624 and we will sort out a time.
