The 1918 coin and the Logan Square monument
The Illinois Centennial Monument rises where the Logan Square boulevards meet Milwaukee Avenue, a column topped by an eagle that was dedicated in 1918 for the state's 100th anniversary. The Mint marked the same anniversary that year with the Illinois Centennial half dollar.
It shows a young, beardless Lincoln based on a statue by Andrew O'Connor, with an eagle from the Illinois state seal on the back. Only 100,058 were struck, all in 90% silver, and collectors pay above silver value for them, with grade setting the price.
The boulevards are lined with greystones, and the side streets are packed with two-flats where owners often lived on one floor and rented out the other. Buildings held that way for decades collect things in odd corners, such as a cigar box on a basement shelf.
What a coin buyer finds in Logan Square leans toward silver dollars and rolls of pre-1965 quarters, with some gold jewelry mixed in. We sort that jewelry by karat before weighing it, from 10K at 41.7% gold up to 18K at 75%, so a heavy 10K chain is never priced like an 18K ring.
Newer owners renovating an old two-flat sometimes open a wall or a crawl space and find coins the last family left. Bring them in the dirt you found them in.
Scrubbing a coin lowers its grade, and the price follows the grade. We check every piece under a loupe for date, mint mark, grade and eye appeal before anything is priced.
Longtime Logan Square families often kept paper money alongside their coins. Silver certificates, small-size red seal United States Notes and large-size notes from before 1929 all turn up, along with National Bank Notes printed with the name and charter number of the local bank that issued them.
Illinois notes from small-town banks draw collectors. A silver certificate can be redeemed only at face value today, so whatever it brings above that comes from collector demand.
Call (773) 241-8624 and we will call you back that day to book a private appointment. At the meeting the coins go under the loupe and the gold and silver go on a scale you can read.
Your written offer lists each item with its price, and a small group of coins can be done in about 10 minutes. You can take cash or a same-day wire, or keep everything along with the list.
