How a coin collection is priced

We go through the collection coin by coin. Scarce dates, better grades and complete sets are priced on current collector demand, checked against price guides, dealer wholesale sheets and recent auction results.

Common 90% silver coins follow the live spot price, and clad coins go at face. Proof and mint sets are priced by year, since silver content changes from set to set.

What sets the price of a collection

  • Coins left in their albums, folders or Mint packaging sell better than loose coins that have been handled.
  • A finished date and mint mark set can draw more interest than the same coins sold one at a time.
  • Cleaned or polished coins bring far less, so leave them as they are.
  • Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, which puts a floor under their price.
  • Better dates and mint marks, like Carson City Morgans, are priced as collector coins.

Selling a collection you built in Chicago

Coin collectors in Chicago often decide to sell when they downsize out of a house they have owned for decades, such as a brick bungalow on the Northwest or Southwest Side or an older home in Elmhurst. Others finished a set years ago and stopped adding to it. You know your coins better than anyone, and we expect you to check our numbers against your own.

Bring your inventory sheets and any receipts for the better pieces. Each coin or set gets its own line on our offer, so you can lay the list next to your records and see where we agree. If a coin you paid a premium for comes back near silver value, we will explain the reason, which is usually that the date or grade no longer carries the demand it once did.

State quarter albums from the early 2000s are in plenty of Chicago homes, and the 2003 Illinois quarter, with a young Lincoln and the Chicago skyline, is usually filled in. Circulated ones are worth 25 cents. The silver proof versions carry silver value, so silver proof sets from those years are priced apart from the clad albums.

Commemorative sets built by Chicago collectors often include the two local half dollars. The Columbian half from the 1893 fair in Jackson Park, where the Museum of Science and Industry now fills the former Palace of Fine Arts, was the first U.S. commemorative coin.

The 1918 Illinois Centennial half marks the same statehood anniversary as the monument on the Logan Square boulevards. A Columbian half with sharp detail and original luster sells for more than a worn one, and the Centennial half sells above its silver, with price following grade.

You can sell part of a collection and keep the rest. Some collectors sell their silver and duplicates and hold onto a set they still enjoy looking at.

A large collection takes 30 to 60 minutes to go through, with every coin under a loupe and the silver on a calibrated scale you can read. If the albums and boxes fill a basement in Glenview or Wilmette, ask about a home visit when you call.

Once you see the written offer, the choice is yours. Take it and you are paid that day, in cash or by same-day wire for a larger sale. Turn it down and every coin goes home with you, along with the priced list.

How selling works

Three steps, usually done in one visit.

  1. 1

    Tell us what you have

Send the form or call. We call back the same day and book a private appointment, Monday to Saturday.

  2. 2

    Watch the appraisal

We check each coin's date, mint mark, grade and metal in front of you, then write the offer down line by line.

  3. 3

    Get paid that day

Say yes and leave with cash, or a same-day wire for a large sale. Say no and keep everything.

Questions about selling coin collections in Chicago

Where can I sell my coin collection in Chicago?

The quickest way is a call to (773) 241-8624, and we book you in any day from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. We buy collections from collectors across the city and the suburbs, from Evanston down to Orland Park, and the meeting place is set when you book. If you leave a message, we call back the same day.

Will a complete set sell for more than the coins on their own?

Sometimes. A complete date and mint mark set with the coins matched in grade can draw more interest than the same coins sold one by one.

A set missing its scarce date is usually priced coin by coin. We will tell you at the appointment whether keeping the set together changes the price.

Are my proof and mint sets worth more than face value?

Many are. Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, so they hold at least their silver value.

Clad proof and mint sets from recent decades often sell near face value or a little above it. We check the year on each set and price the silver sets and the clad sets separately.

Should I clean my coins before selling the collection?

Please do not. Cleaning lowers a coin's grade, and collectors pay far less for a cleaned coin even when it looks brighter.

Dust and old toning are fine. Leave coins in the albums, flips or holders they sit in now, since pulling them out by hand can add fingerprints and fine scratches.

Do I have to sell the whole collection at once?

You can sell as much or as little as you like. Each item on the written offer has its own price, so you can accept some lines and take the rest home. Many collectors sell their silver and duplicate coins first and keep the sets they built by hand for another day.
