How silver is priced
Silver is priced on its pure silver content. A .999 bar or round counts almost entirely, 90% U.S. coins count at 90%, and sterling counts at 92.5%.
We weigh each group, work out the troy ounces of pure silver, and apply the live spot price. Silver dollars and scarce dates that sell to collectors for more than melt are pulled out and priced separately.
What sets a silver offer
- Purity runs from 35% in war nickels to .999 in most bars and rounds.
- Weight is read in troy ounces, and a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams.
- $1 face value of 90% coins holds about 0.715 troy oz of silver.
- Sterling flatware and holloware are bought by weight.
- Morgan and Peace dollars can carry collector value above their silver.
Melt value today: American Silver Eagle (1 troy oz, .999 silver)

Selling silver in Chicago
To sell silver in Chicago, most people bring coins someone set aside over a working life, a chest of sterling flatware nobody uses anymore, or both. As silver buyers serving the city and suburbs, we weigh every piece on a calibrated scale in front of you and price it against the live spot price.
Many Chicago families who lived through the switch to clad coins in 1965 pulled the old silver out of their pocket change and kept it. Coffee cans of 90% dimes and quarters still turn up in bungalows in Berwyn, Cicero and on the Southwest Side, along with rolls of 1965 to 1970 Kennedy halves, which are 40% silver. War nickels dated 1942 to 1945 belong in the pile too, since they are 35% silver.
Sterling is 92.5% silver, and we buy flatware and holloware by weight. Large older homes in Oak Park, Hinsdale and Evanston can hold a full service with serving pieces, and that weight adds up.
Look for a sterling or 925 stamp on the back of a handle. Silver-plated pieces hold very little silver, so we set them aside and tell you why.
Silver bullion reaches us as bars and rounds from refiners such as PAMP Suisse, Engelhard, Johnson Matthey and the Royal Canadian Mint, most of it .999 silver. American Silver Eagles, made since 1986, each hold one troy oz of .999 silver. Silver proof sets from many years carry 90% silver coins and are weighed for their silver content.
Silver dollars are checked for collector value first. Morgan dollars dated 1878 to 1904 and 1921, and Peace dollars dated 1921 to 1935, each hold 0.7734 troy oz of silver, and Carson City Morgans from 1878 to 1893 draw collectors well beyond that. Two Chicago coins are also 90% silver and sell above it.
The Columbian half dollar from the 1893 fair in Jackson Park is common in worn grades and brings a little more than its silver, and the 1893 Isabella quarter sells well above its silver in any grade. We check all of these against collector prices before treating anything as melt.
A big hoard of coins or a full flatware service can take 30 to 60 minutes to sort and weigh. Appointments run Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and sellers with a heavy estate can ask about a home visit. Larger sales can be paid by same-day wire to your bank.

Questions about selling sell silver in Chicago
Where can I sell silver in Chicago?
Call Chicago Coin Buyers at (773) 241-8624 to book a private appointment. We buy silver bars, rounds, Silver Eagles, 90% coins, silver dollars and sterling from sellers in the city and suburbs. Everything is weighed on a calibrated scale you can read, and you get a written offer before you decide anything.
Do you buy sterling silver flatware?
Yes. We buy sterling flatware and holloware by weight, since sterling is 92.5% silver.
Look for a sterling or 925 stamp on the back of each piece. Silver-plated pieces hold very little silver, so sort those out if you can, or bring everything and we will separate the two during your appointment.
How much silver is in old quarters and dimes?
U.S. dimes, quarters and halves dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver, and $1 face value of those coins holds about 0.715 troy oz of silver. Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver. Most dimes, quarters and halves dated 1965 and later are copper-nickel clad and are worth face value.
Are silver certificates worth their weight in silver?
Silver certificates are paper money, and today they can be redeemed only at face value. Some still carry collector value, such as star notes, which are replacement notes, and notes in sharp condition. Bring them along with your silver, and we will look at them as paper money and list them separately on your offer.
Do silver buyers in Chicago pay the same day?
We do. When you accept the written offer, you are paid the same day in cash, or by same-day wire to your bank for a larger sale.
Bring a government-issued photo ID to sell. If you decline, you keep all of your silver along with the item-by-item list we wrote.
