What we buy Currency & Paper Money

What we buy

Sell Old Currency & Paper Money in Chicago, IL

Paper money is the category sellers most often underestimate. An old note tucked in a book can be worth a large multiple of the number printed on it, and we buy American currency across every era at our office south of the Loop.

Three things drive a note’s value: what kind of note it is, how many survive, and how well it has been kept. That last one matters more with paper than with metal, so everything is handled at the edges and graded with a conservative eye.

The currency we take

  • Silver certificates and gold certificates
  • Large-size notes issued before 1928
  • National bank notes, including Illinois issues
  • Star notes and unusual or low serial numbers
  • Fractional currency and obsolete broken-bank notes
  • Confederate issues and other early American paper

How currency gets priced

Each note is placed by its series and type, weighed against how many are known to exist, and then adjusted for how it has survived. Certificates, national issues, and star notes usually carry a premium, while ordinary later notes often sit close to face unless something distinguishes them.

Preservation swings the number hard. A note that has never been folded can be worth several times the same note with a crease, a stain, or a pinhole, which is why nothing here gets folded, marked, or pressed.

FAQ

Sell Old Currency & Paper Money in Chicago, IL: common questions

Could my old bills be worth more than their face value?

Very possibly. Silver and gold certificates, large-size notes, national bank notes, and star notes all trade above face. Bring them by and we will separate the collectible from the ordinary.

How much does a fold or stain really cost me?

More than most people expect. Paper is graded strictly, and an untouched note can be worth several multiples of a circulated one, so we assess condition carefully and explain where a note lands.

What about currency from other countries?

Our focus is American paper, where the market is deepest and we can pay best. Bring foreign notes anyway and we will look at them and tell you honestly where they are better sold.
